These are my conclusions after the extended research I've been doing on DIYing ombre hair.
Things one needs:
- Good quality bleach and developer (30 volume is preferential because 40 is even more damaging);
- Toner. Purple shampoo or marks can be used, but sometimes something stronger is needed, for example some kind of "icy blonde purply" hair dye;
- Aluminum foil previously cut to the desired size;
- Container and brush to mix the bleach and developer and apply;
- Something to untangle and section the hair;
- Something to clip the sectioned hair;
- Gloves;
- Really good quality shampoo, conditioner and mask to use afterwords because bleaching is very very damaging to the hair.
- I may be forgetting something.
Results may vary depending on one's hair and skills.
In my case I'm still trying to figure out if I can use Granny's shampoo for the toning. I think so because she uses a purple shampoo to keep her white/silvery hair from going yellow. On the other hand my hair is pretty damaged due to years of deep red and orange painting jobs and some bleaching in between. I have a dark past... Plus, I'm not that skilled.
After months of research, doubt, reading and crying, I decided to follow my favorite YouTube tutorial and hope for my hair's best behavior. It soothes me that if it turns out fried and disgusting I can just cut it!
During this week I plan on going to my favorite hair store to get some more advice and buy the products.
